How to edit carpet design in Photoshop

Making carpet design on Photoshop is similar like making any other designs for printing. Here also you need to edit the design in a way where the colors are neatly separated from each other. Here I will show you how you can edit a layout for carpet in Photoshop. First you need find the pixels of the carpet to edit. If you want to know how to calculate the pixels for carpet you may click this link to learn more. I have always made a layout first like an artwork and then followed to process to edit it.

Here I have put the details step by step, which will be easier to understand and follow.

1. Open a layout which you want to edit in Photoshop.

2.Resize the layout as per the pixels for 5 x 8 feet which is 608 x 976, you can check the link to learn about the calculation I follow.

3. Now we see the design is in the correct pixels ready to be edited now.

4. Now we will create a new layer, we will not edit on the main file. Doing your drawing is always better on the new layer, it keeps the original file untouched to keep checking the editing.

5. When we zoom in the image we see how pixelated it is. This will be our base to draw onto the next layer.

6. We will select pencil with 2 pixels to start the drawing on the new layer with a bright color. It is like making a trace of the design. You can use the same color from the design but I prefer to use brighter color for editing because it is visually easier to make the difference between the colors. The color can be changed in the final design plate.

7. Reading color in design is very important that is what makes the shapes and character so beautiful. So, choose a brighter color and start drawing on the layer. For this design, we can start from the darkest tone. We will keep each color in different layer.

8. Here the Darkest green color area has been traced and drawn all over.

9. Similarly, we will edit the next shade of green, we will keep the layer below the ‘darkest green’ so that the editing doesn’t get overlapped.

10. Here all the colors are drawn completely.

11. This is how it looks like after complete editing or you can say cleaning or drawing. You can compare the layout and the final edited version.

12. When we zoom in, we can see the how clean it is now.

13. Now we will change the color as per the original layout/reference colors. For this you can select the color pick tool (yellow tick) to pick the color from original image and then fill that color (using bucket tool purple tick) in the edited version after selecting the layer in that edited area.

Other way you can directly select bucket tool and take the curser on the original image press alt/option (the pick tool will activate), click on the color and then release the alt/option button, and the bucket tool will reactivate. Now you can fill the color in the edited version after selecting the layer.

14. Here is the complete image of edited version. Now there can be different way of saving the file.

  • One is BMP but here the layer will be merged thought you will be able to separate the layer easily.
  • Second is PSD format which is I prefer to do so.

Thank you !
