How to drape Cushion cover design on Photoshop

Why should we learn draping patterns on the product? because it helped me seeing my design on the product without spending money on sampling. I was able to get attentions on my designs when it was actually draped on the product. There are different ways of draping the pattern, I am sharing what I have been following. It is simple and easy to create.

I will explain my method step by step here, so that you can do it easily and effortlessly.

  1. First we need a plain cushion image with a white background. You will find many copyright free images online to download. Let’s open it in Photoshop.

2. Next we will try to cut the cushion into new layer by using polygonal lasso tool.

3. Layer via cut

4. Now we have two layers ready, we will make a square which is little bigger than the cushion area.

5. Now select the yellow square with any selection tool.

6. Select the layer with yellow square, bring the cursor in the center of the yellow box, right click  and click on convert to smart object.

7. Now right click again at the same spot and click free transform.

8. Now right click again, same spot third time and click warp.

9. Bring the opacity level of the layer to 40% so that we can see the shape of the cushion. After that we will drag the points marked in the image towards the center of the square to get some curves following the shape of the cushion.

10. Now we see how we have added nice curves all four sides but keeping it the margin around it as well.

11. We will do the same with the central square points to make it little curvier.

12. Now this is how it looks, and press enter.

13. Bring the layer to 2nd number so that the background comes on the top

14. We will move to the next level in which we will add some shadows to give it a 3-dimentional look. For that first select gradient tool, change the color to black and create a new layer below the background layer.

15. Select gradient tool press and drag from I to II and release.

16. This is how it should look like after releasing the mouse or pen.

17. And this is how it will look after doing the same thing from all four sides.

18. Now you can take the opacity of the shadow layer to 63% because we just want little bit of it

19. And your MASTER FILE for draping is ready. You should it in PSD format for whenever you want to drape any pattern for visualization.

Now we will check to see if we are really able to achieve what something here. So …LETS DRAPE AND SEE!

For this select the third yellow layer and, there is a small thumbnail at right bottom of the yellow square, double click on that and a box will appear. Click ‘OK’.

20. Here a new window will open beside your main master file like image below.

21. Open a design or pattern you want to drape. Once opened drag the design to this window and set in the box. Once done click save or click (control + S). A box will appear again just click ‘OK’.

22. now go back to the master file and check if the design fits properly. If you want to change the position of the pattern you can go back to the smart object window and drag the pattern and save. It will automatically show in the master file.

Make sure that the smart box layer in the master file has 100% opacity.

Thank you !!
